How Wildlife Credits work

The Wildlife Credits Fund administered by the Community Conservation Fund of Namibia operates as a results-based mechanism for wildlife credits. It pays for verifiable outcomes that both the public and private sectors can report, ensuring that the data are measurable, reliable, transparent and verifiable.

From the identification of a conservation outcome to the payment from Wildlife Credits Namibia, a multi-level multi-layered approach ensures local and national support for Wildlife Credits, beginningĀ at the community level:

1. Community expresses interest in utilizing a Wildlife Credits product to support their conservation efforts

Discussions ensue with Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, Wildlife Credits partner organizations and other conservation organizations, local and national stakeholders.

2. Conservation outcomes, verification process, compliance requirements, and pricing is agreed upon at community level
Contracts between the conservancy and the Community Conservation Fund of Namibia are signed.
3. Conservancies engage in targeted conservation efforts to deliver on the agreed conservation outcomes
Technical support is provided by Wildlife Credits partner organizations and other conservation organizations.

4. Ongoing verification and monitoring

Monitoring tools include but are not limited to camera traps, satellite images, event book monitoring, game counts, aerial surveys, and other technology which can ensure independent, verifiable results.

Independent monitoring is ensured through the Wildlife Credits dashboard.

5. Conservancy submits annual management and financial plans to MEFT

These are carefully assessed by the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism to establish compliance.

6. Payments are made

Following independent verification of conservation outcomes and compliance considerations, payments are made to the conservancy in accordance with agreed pricing.

To date, successful Wildlife Credit initiatives have rewarded communities for the protection of wildlife zones and a critical elephant corridor in the Zambezi region, and for increased tolerance for living with lions in northwestern Namibia.

Examples of the use of funds and their impact on conservation and communities can be found on our Impact page.
