Uibasen Twyfelfontein Conservancy

Uibasen Twyfelfontein Conservancy

The conservancy is very small, but significant for tourism as it includes the World Heritage site at Twyfelfontein, which means 'doubtful fountain'. The site is famous for rock engravings made by Bushmen or Damara people as far back as 4,000 years. Uibasen means 'live for yourself' in the Khoekhoegowab (or Damara/Nama) language.

Uibasen-Twyfelfontein was registered in 1999 and covers a mere 286 km2. There are 230 people in the area. It is situated in north west Namibia’s Kunene region.

The conservancy landscape is a mix of hills, sparse savannah, plains and wooded river valleys with areas of scenic granite kopjes. Other features of interest are the Burnt Mountain and Organ Pipes – both geological formations. Wildlife includes elephant, leopard, mountain zebra, kudu, gemsbok, ostrich, springbok, steenbok, duiker, klipspringer.

Income is derived from tourism. Uibasen-Twyfelfontein has a joint-venture tourism agreement with Twyfelfontein Country Lodge.
